maTrigal
Contemporary classical meets electronic music, elaborate harmonies merge with elements of world music and jazz, and driving beats fuse with complex polyrhythms. maTrigal is equally a chamber music ensemble and a band, creating a distinctive blend of danceable and concertante new music.
At the heart of maTrigal’s work is a fluid approach to composition and improvisation. Their music often grows from small musical fragments – a melody, a rhythmic pattern, a harmonic progression or simply a particular sound – which are explored and transformed collectively. Rather than settling within a single genre, the ensemble moves freely between different musical languages and traditions, allowing unexpected connections to emerge.
Drawing inspiration from experimental jazz fusion, contemporary chamber music, electronica and folkloric traditions – including rhythms, melodies and phrasing associated with West and North African music – maTrigal approaches these influences as points of departure rather than fixed stylistic frameworks. The result is music shaped by contrast and constant movement: intricate yet immediate, experimental yet accessible, and always driven by the ensemble’s search for new and previously unheard musical territory.
